advance tickets kurobe gorge?

We are going to the Kurobe gorge next week. Do you think it would be possible to buy tickets for the torokko train on the same day or would it be advisable to make advance reservations? Do you think there woukd be a huge crowd? We are going on a weekday. We do not speak Japanese so we are not sure if it would be easy to just make reservations over the phone.

It's nice season to visit kurobe.
From 29th april to 6th may, everywhere in Japan is very crouded, so if you come to Japan next week, you don't need to buy advance tickets(you can purchase your tickets at the Unazuki Station.), but you need to book your return chickets when you get off at Keyakidaira,the upper terminus of the Torokko railway. If you don't, you might have a long wait until a train with a seat available comes.
