izu drive 2013/5/15 11:38
was deciding whether to drive from Tokyo down to Izu or take the rental car from one of the train stations at Izu..meaning taking train from tokyo down to Izu first.

How long would the drive be when I take the car from ikebukuro to Izukogen for example ? more 4 hrs have traffic jam ? intended date is 16th july for over night stay.

Read through some threads and hear recommendations to the west.. Would appreciate some pointers to see scenery and nice beaches .

Any suggestions on nice inns/hotels to stay there ?

I am familiar with mapcodes taught by forummer here.. but not sure Nippon would supply me a car with mapcodes ?

thank you so much

Driving all by car has the advantage of ease of luggage management and comfort. The disadvantage is the confusing, possibly stressful car ride out of Tokyo and the risk of traffic jams. The answer to which one is better will depend on personal preference.

Without traffic jams, I think Google's estimate of 2.5 hours is quite realistic:

It should not a particular busy day on the peninsula itself.

Yes, I, too, find the southwestern and western coast of the peninsula particularly attractive.

I recommend to go with phone numbers. All GPS systems let you enter destinations by phone number.

Droozy,

We did a similar trip over a year ago. But took a train to Ito, and from there we rented a car exploring the IZU peninsular .
We highly recommend you visit the small tourist information office just across the road, right side , from Ito station. The people there were extremely friendly , and helpful. We could not thank them enough for helping us with information, arranging car rental, providing all the telephone numbers for places we were visiting.
And the rental-car office is just behind the tourist office.

That's difficult. I had ryokan in mind. If you can't find the attractions on the map and input them that way, using Mapcodes would be, indeed, the better approach. But I am sorry I never use them, so I don't know whether they are a guaranteed part of GPS systems.

Any suggested route that you can proposed to me ?

If you had enough time, I would recommend driving the peninsula down along the east coast and up again along the west coast. But if you have only two days, you would be spending most of your days driving. So, I recommend to look into which sights you want to see, look at a map and come up with a route that most effectively connects the sites you want to see.

Any carpark issues ?

I have never had parking issues on the Izu Peninsula before. Some tourist spots will charge small parking fees.

I am sure there are some tolls from Tokyo to Izu. any idea how much ?

It depends on the route taken, but it is likely to be around 3000 yen one way. The peninsula itself has some toll roads for tourists which go through nice scenery and are less busy than the coastal roads.

It is a complex that includes a bath, a spa, a restaurant and a hotel.

Can stay for two person too ?

The hotel seems to have two types of cottages. One accommodates up to 4 people and the other up to six people:

Re: izu drive 2013/5/16 13:33

We did not have time to cover the western side of IZU, as we had to go to Magome & Tsumago the next day.
The previous post was our emergency West IZU itinerary provided by the staff in The ITO tourist office.
