Gion - What is good in daytime? 2013/5/25 00:27
What is good to see Gion in the daytime?
Any chance of seeing Geisha or chances is higher in the evening? Will be in Kyoto early June. Prior to Gion, will visit Kiyomizu temple.

The old building facades of Hanamikoji and the Shirakawa canal are somewhat interesting at anytime of the day. But overall, I think that the Higashiyama district is more interesting during daytime. The chances to see maiko or geiko are lower during the daytime. You may come across fake maiko, though, who many people have problems to distinguish from real maiko and who are more happy to be taken photos of than real maiko.

Going down from Kiyomizu, go to Yasaka Pagoda, unknown but interesting. Then visit Kodai-ji temple.http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

In the neighborhood I like to walk starting from Kodai-ji, to Kamogawa through Ishibe koji and Shirakawa.http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Even if there is no chance of meeting a real maiko, this walk shows the traditional streets of Kyoto.
There are too many people in Hanamikoji during the day.
The only visible Kimono girls will be "maiko henshin" dressed for the day.
Unfortunately, tourists have no respect for the tranquility of real maiko who go out in the evening.http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie...

Enjoy your stay in Kyoto

It is quite nice in the daytime, especially the path back toward Kiyomizudera. I dont particularly like Gion at night. Gion corner is fine but some of it is a red light district and it is quite seedy and borderline sinister.
