Do you think that it is necessary to have a guide to show you (2 "mature" couples) around Naoshima? Or is it easy to get around on your own?

Naoshima is a fairly small island. you can navigate the place without any problem.

We visited the island over a year ago, took the 100 yen bus from Miyanoura ferry terminal to the Chichu Art museum, and walk plus free shuttle bus from museum to museum.
If you start from the opposite direction , take the 100 yen bus to the Tsutsujiso bus stop first and....

Additional information:

After visiting the Museums we took the 100 yen bus from Tsutsujiso bus stop to visit the art house projects, and then 100 yen bus again back to Miyanoura ferry terminal.

It's fine without a guide, especially if you persevere with the Benesse website - which does have all the info but isn't that intuitive to navigate imho. There's so much great art to see, and not too much moving about between the main sites.
You can walk from Benesse to Chichu, and get the bus to the art house projects.
I love Naoshima. It's top of our list for our next trip. Hope you love it too...

No need for a guide. The island is easily navigable and virtually everything has good English (as well as Chinese and Korean) guidance.

For most people a guide is not necessary. If you like biking, bike rentals are a great way to see the island as well.

However, if what you mean by 'mature' is 'elderly' having a guide that can take you to each destination could be useful if walking is difficult/takes time or there are some other conditions that could slow you down and cause you to miss things.

If everyone is healthy, though, even if biking isn't your thing, as others have mentioned, the buses should be fine.

I agree with the others. A guide will not be necessary.
Naoshima is a very small island and is best explored by bicycle.

In order to have enough time I recommend that you arrive early in the morning or stay overnight.
