Arashiyama itinerary without monkey park 2013/9/28 19:09
Hi,

We may be arriving Kyoto around 10am in the morning so we will leave our luggage at the ryokan and proceed to go to Arashiyama. The itinerary suggested in this site seemed ok except for the monkey park. I have seen too much of monkeys. Are there any attraction in Arashiyama that I can replace it with?

There's quite a lot to see in Arashiyama besides the monkey park.

But you also might want to see the Toei Kyoto Movie Park (Uzumasaeigamura) which is a couple train stops away from Arashiyama.

I also highly recommend Toei Ninja Studio Park! In fact, it took up almost my entire afternoon, and I could've spent more time there. It is slightly pricey to do a lot of the attractions, however. I think we ended up paying somewhere AROUND $40 USD a person for the Ninja Training, the Jiraiya theater show, and like three other attractions. We had a BLAST. The Dragon Ball Z movie had just come out at the time, and they had a really fun exhibit for it.

Literally right outside Toei Ninja Studio Park is a calligraphy class I signed my group up for (four adults). The four in my group all had a great time, and Kazuki is super friendly. We learned a basic character and he framed it so we could take it home. Here is his Facebook if you're interested: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Japanese-Calligraphy-Workshop/202893896... Very reasonably priced.

I did the Monkey Park back in 2010, and it was fun, but it's definitely all about the monkeys. You do get a fantastic view of Kyoto from atop the mountain, but if you're monkey'd out ... you should be good, lol.

Arashiyama is an attration all by itself!

The Togetsukyo bridge (pardon me if it's misspelled) is quite a sight, and walking it gave me a strange feeling of nostalgia.

As for specific places, I can recommend the Bamboo forest. It's very pretty and a relaxing walk:
