It seems difficult to find a non-smoking accommodation here.
Do you know of any?
Can Nyuto Onsen be visited as a day trip? If so, which city can I stay in?

Oh, sorry, didn't read the last bit of text there. I think the best place to be based for a day trip is Morioka, which is an hour and a half by car. Although you can make it on public transport, I'd recommend a car rental there.

A day trip from Akita city to Nyuto Onsen is also perfectly doable. There's lots of affordable business hotels to choose from.

Would staying at a toyoko inn Akita be ok to stay and day trip to Nyuto Onsen? How would I do this with jr pass?

Just get any Shinkansen stopping at Tazawako. The rest of the journey will have to be done by bus from Tazawako, which is not covered by the JRPass
|
