Arashiyama flooding by typhoon #18? 2013/10/18 22:58
Wife and I are planning a trip to Japan soon. We have enjoyed Arashiyama before, and are considering going back. However, the recent flooding from Typhoon #18 has given us pause, as it looks like Arashiyama was hit pretty hard.

What is the current status of that area? Is it fit for tourists to stop by, or is it a disaster zone on par with New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? Should we avoid the area until our next trip (probably a couple of years away)?

How about other areas of the city, e.g. in the region of Ginkakuji (I'm thinking here of The Philosopher's Walk), or Ryoanji (i.e. the Kinukake no Michi walk)?

I think typhoon problems go as fast they come in Japan. I will be more aware of what's coming. I heard another typhoon is coming early next week. I was caught twice with overnight trains suspended out of 4 that I planned. They don't inform you until you check in. Just check regularly on your train status whenever you pass by a train station and have contingency plan.

Randen lines (= Arashiyama and Kitano Lines of Keifuku) have been in normal operation since before Typhoon #1318 Man-yi.
Keihan Keishin Line and Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line (, which are jointed in Misasagi,) came back to normal on 30 September.
As is reported in the Mainichi article, the Hozugawa River cruises were resumed on 2 October.

It is explained by Kyoto City that as of 1 October 2013, you can do sightseeing as usual in Arashiyama area and other tourist spots in the city. It is also recommended that you would check, to make sure, the situation of facilities you are going to visit.
