Using jr pass, is it easy to get to beppu from hakata?
We plan on spending the day in beppu to see the hells and then return hakata the same day.

But it can be faster to take the shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura and transfer to the limited express train there: http://www.hyperdia.com/The shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura is covered by the Japan Rail Pass (except Nozomi and Mizuho trains), but it is not covered by the Kyushu Rail Pass. The limited express trains are covered by both the Japan Rail Pass and Kyushu Rail Pass.
