Are there a lot of snakes at Mt. Osore? 2013/12/15 05:19
We will be traveling to Mt. Osore in May. I am wondering if there will be a lot of snakes this time of year? How likely are we to see any snakes?

I haven't been there but I cannot find any place that talks about the area being home to snakes. I'm not sure that snakes would like the heat and sulfur...

Is there a reason why you think there will be snakes?

I was there 2 years ago in May, did not notice any snakes. Possibly I did not venture further to " the bushes".

At any rate, in many countries not all snakes are poisonous.
When I was in Europe I saw snakes routinely when walking my dogs in the woods.I only saw poisonous ones a few times and they quickly disappeared in the underbrush...

Thanks for the replies. I was reading another blog about Mt. Osore, and he mentioned there were signs posted about dangerous pit vipers.I am terrified of snakes and was nervous about our visit.

I visited Osore-san around 2006. I have seen snakes only 3 times in 15 years travelling around Japan (been unlucky here), but the most visible snake I saw was at Osore-san. It was a small one, around 3 ft long and 1.5" thick. I wanted to play with it, but it was quick and scrambled away in an instant. I did not see any others the 3 hrs I spent there.

It's quite spooky to see snakes there though, with all the dead spirits around. Was it really a snake???

Check all your pics when you get back from Osore-san. I have heard of strange persons or things showing up in them. I checked all of mine and did not see anything out of the ordinary.

No problem!
A lot of similar signs in mountain area in Japan
but not living near travelers walking roads.
This is the snake[Mamushi(まむし/マムシ)] caution[注意] sign of Osore-zan(Mt.).

Mamushi exactly most dangerous snake in Japan
but not living a lot than other kinds
and not positive attacking if very close like this.

Snakes are cute. I have seen about 20-30 of them in the wild in 10 years of intensive travel through Japan. None of them on Osorezan, but two on a single hike up Mount Misen on Miyajima. And another 1-2 per year in our garden. But all of them were non-poisonous varieties.

I went to Mt. Osore in May 2012 (http://zoomingjapan.com/travel/shimokita-peninsula-mt-osore/) and there weren't any snakes, but it was raining as there was a typhoon, so maybe they were hiding.
Never heard that there are a lot of snakes, though.

Never mind the mountains.

It's those Snakes on a Plane that you should be worried about ;0)
