Overnight in Mt Koya 2014/1/29 12:35

Can anyone recommend a good temple to stay in overnight in Mt Koya? I've got the temple lodging website, but I'd love some recommendations from peoples personal experience.

In particular we'd love to do the whole standing under the waterfall experience, or something similarly ascetic.

It doesn't need to be Mt Koya, it could also be Nara.

Cheers for any insights.

Without a doubt I'd recommend Shojoshin-in. I've stayed there and it was a beautiful temple and great location.

(sorry can't find an official site)

Standing under waterfalls is Shugendo, while Koyasan is Buddhism. Maybe try Kumano instead:

I had a great experience in Jumyoin where we stayed this November. It is a smaller temple, centrally located right next to the bus stop, and it seemed to be among the cheaper temples on Koya-san. We paid around 9000 per person in a large room, including exquisite dinner and breakfast.
