May I ask where can I purchase the bus ticket to Zao? From the ticket counter at the Yamagata train station? What about the return ticket? From the ticket counter at the Zao Station bus stop?

bus operate by Yamako bus[山交バス] not JR-East(Train campany).

Bus dep from East exit [no.1]
walk 1min to right from JR ticket gate[2F] then turn left.
