Mount Aso - constantly closed? 2014/3/16 20:25
We want to visit Mount Aso in July.
I read that the ropeway/crater area was basically constantly closed since Dec13, is this true?

http://www.aso.ne.jp/~volcano/info.html

On the status website I have not seen an "open" message neither. What is the current status?

Thanks a lot

Access to the crater became possible again a few days ago after the level was decreased from level 2 (no-entry zone of 1 kilometer around the crater) to level 1 (normal). It was at level 2 for about 2.5 months before that.

Right now a "closed" message is shown because it is the middle of the night.

That site is a little tricky to interpret as it reports real time status. If you visit the site when it late evening or early morning in Japan the "gate closed" message will appear.

Although the general access restriction due to volcanic activity was lifted on March 12, 2014, there have since been several occassions on which temporary restrictions were enacted due to factors such as gaseous emissions, fog, and icy roads.

" no area is restricted at present "

so the volcano is fully accessible.

how's about ropeway, are the works finished?

Is going to crater near the mountain, it becomes possible by the amount of volcanic gas, but it is to go by bus instead of the ropeway.
As is written in the FAQ of the ropeway company, is whether it is possible to enter the crater nearby and will be announced each day at about 8:30 is the time of the business before.
