Radiation levels in Hanamiyama, Fukushima 2014/4/2 01:24
We will be travelling to Japan mid April and will sadly miss many of the cherry blossom viewing spots. However we're planning to go for a hike at Mt. Takao, look for late blooming sakura in Shinjuku Park and take a day trip to Hanamiyama Park, Fukushima. I just wanted to make sure that it's now completely safe to travel to Fukushima because I couldn't find any recent information of current radiation levels there. Thanks!

It was never unsafe to visit Fukushima City. Right now, the radiation levels are about 5-10 times higher before the accident, but that poses no threat to human health. Radiation on board of an airplane at cruising altitude is about 10-20 times higher than in Hanamiyama. And a single CT scan exposes you to more radiation than a 1-year stay at Hanamiyama.

Thanks for clearing that up Uji, your replies on this forum have been so helpful!

Are there any other late blooming cherry blossom viewing spots you can recommend aside from the ones I've listed? We are arriving Tokyo April 9 and will be staying at Lake Kawaguchiko for 1 night on the 15th, 2 nights Nagoya, 3 nights Kyoto, 2 nights Kanazawa, 2 nights Takayama and back to Tokyo on April 26.

Many thanks!
May

Lake Kawaguchiko could be nice for cherry blossoms around April 15:

Yoshino south of Kyoto may still have blossoms:
