Shinkanzen day trip from tokyo 2014/4/5 20:31
Hi! I have a jr pass, and i want to do a day trip from tokyo. I was/ will be going to Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima. I think something far from tokyo would be nice, so I can get the most value out of it. But i did not plan for this, so im not entirely sure, what would be the best. What do you reccomend? I'm considering Nagano+Matsumato, but i don't know a whole lot about them. Is there something that especially nice now?

Sorry for the bad english. :D

When? Which date starts?

Not shinkan(z)en "shinkan(s)en".

Echoing the previous commenter, it might be a good idea to indicate the planned date of your day trip, so that the community can offer better suggestions. An indication of what you'd especially like to see (castles? historic sites? etc.) can also be helpful.

Matsumoto's an excellent choice. With good connections, the trip can take 3+ hours and cost more than 9,000 yen (one way). If you start with the first train from Tokyo and go back by one of the later ones, this should leave you with a fair amount of time for sightseeing, and it will help squeeze lots of extra value out of the pass (although it won't by itself be enough make the pass pay off).

Assuming the forecast on this site is correct (and bear in mind that it might not be), the cherry blossoms are due to open a few days from now - so if you're planning to go there around mid-April it might be the perfect time for hanami.

Here's my account of an April 2013 trip to the castle:

Sendai's not a bad choice in this season, either. According to the same forecast, the blossoms are also expected to open there in a few days' time. 90+ minutes and 10-11,000 yen (one way), easily doable as a day trip from Tokyo - I did it myself last spring.

But again, it all depends on your schedule and what you'd like to see. I'm sure the community will be able to offer some good suggestions once they know more.

Cheerio.

Thanks for the suggestions! It's a little more closer date. Today. :D I think I'll go to Matsumoto then, but going to read Your blog first. Thanks again.
