Takayama and Kanazawa best time spent 2014/4/6 10:16
I'm heading to japan with my parents in nov and part of my itinerary I have is goin to yudanaka matsumoto and then onto takayama. The dates I have atm are as follows
25/11/2014 Matsumoto - Takayama (bus) 140m Arr: Takayama 1625
26/11/2014 Takayama
27/11/2014 Takayama - Kanazawa 7:42am – 10:47am 185m
28/11/2014 Kanazawa - Osaka 14:57 – 17:35pm 158m

My question is if i should rearrange the time spent in takayama and give the extra night to kanazawa? I feel we should spend more time in kanazawa and it would be my preference of the two places. How long would it take to see most of everything in Takayama (ie not miss anything major but not be too rushed)? I know some ppl here love the town and could stay there for days, but realistically what is the minimum amount of time to see everything

I dont think we have time for Shirakawago but if people think it can be fit in for a few hours i'd be interested to know. I can add an extra day into this area if it is necessary but i'd prefer not to.

Thanks!

Personally I think you spend too many days in Takayama, perhaps 2D1N is enough. You can spend one day trip to Shirakawago from Kanazawa or Takayama, takes you an hour bus ride only. If you can, spend a night in Shirakawago. It's once in a life time experience to stay in one of the farmhouse. My mother and auntie at age of 60 enjoy a lot.

If you want me to choose either Takayama or Kanazawa, my vote would be Takayama.

See my post about Shirakawago

Forgot to mention, we stayed in Takayama 1 night, Shirakawago 1 night then Kanazawa 1 night before we moved on to Kyoto. If you want to do the same like what I did, try to arrive Takayama early morning so you can do a bit of visit (morning market) in Takayama the next day before you leave to Shirakawago. Sun set early during winter and I guess it should be at 530pm (you gotta check) in end Nov. So you should try to reach Shirakawago by 12pm and you still have quite a bit of time to visit the little village. Dusk is the best time to take photo in this village when all gassho house lights on. You can take 10am bus to Kanazawa the next day.

You have to go to Shirakawago. Try your best to spend the night there. It's amazing. Blows Takayama and Kanazawa right out of the water. All places you can definitely do in one day each.

Thanks for the help. So then

25/11/2014 Matsumoto - Takayama (bus) 140m Arr: Takayama 1625
26/11/2014 Takayama-Shirakawago 1350 - 1452pm
27/11/2014 Shirakawago - Kanazawa 850 - 1005am
28/11/2014 Kanazawa - Osaka 14:57 – 17:35pm

looking at my arrival and departure times and the time spent in each place. Is it enough time devoted to see everything?

Looks all right to me. You can try to arrive Shirakawago slightly earlier by 1pm.
