where is the best place to stay in Yamagata when visiting Yamadera? We will be there for one night. Is there anywhere to stay at the top of the mountain? Also restaurant recommendations. We are arriving from Sendai by train. Thanks Karen

Yamadera is a small sleepy village. I would say there was nothing after dark; and the main attraction , the temple on the hill ( hardly a mountain) , would take probably 2 hours ( or even less) to explore.
I visited the place a few years ago ; I could not recall seeing any lodging on top of the hill. If I were you, I would plan Yamadera as a short stopover . You could visit other attraction for remaining of the day.
