Hi
Where can I see monkeys in Japan? I believe they are called snow monkeys. I prefer around Nara or Kyoto are.

They can be seen sometimes in forests near Nikko and Nasu in Tochigi prefecture. The "Snow Monkeys" are Japanese Macaques and can be dangerous to approach in the wild. I have encountered them while hiking in the mountains.

The snow monkeys are by no means limited to Nagano.
They can be found in every prefecture in Shikoku, Kyushu, and Honshu (except Ibaraki?).
In fact, the monkeys in Arashiyama's Monkey Park are the same monkeys (Japanese macaques).

Let me clarify a bit, because I think I'm being misunderstood here. Japanese monkeys (often generically called snow monkeys) can be found in nature or in monkey parks across the country except in Okinawa and Hokkaido. However, the Snow Monkeys that travelers want to visit usually refers to the monkey at the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano. These can reliably be seen in snow during the winter, and are where virtually all of the pics on monkeys in snow or in onsen in snow are taken.
But as mentioned, you can see monkeys at lots of places around Japan, including in Arashiyama. Just don't expect to see them romping through the snow, because it rarely snows there.

Thank you all for your replies, I got plenty of information. I don't mind what type of monkeys they are as long as I can see them:)
