In the US, we use "k" to shorten large numbers (in thousands) or to abbreviate "thousand". (i.e. $10,000 = $10k) In Japan, what is used in the same concept?

Japanese count mainly in units of 10,000. However, of course there are smaller and larger units too.
10 = 十 (ju) 100 = 百 (hyaku) 1,000 = 千 (sen) 10,000 = 万 (man) 100,000,000 = 億 (oku; 10,000 x 10,000)

I should expand on this.
If you want to say 5000, you say "go-sen" (go = 5).
If you want to say 30,000, you say "san-man" (san = 3).
