How long would it take to get from Tokyo to Yamagata City and would a JR pass be useful for this trip?

The pass won't pay off on the Yamagata round trip alone. You'll have to add another destination to make it worth it.

You really don't want to go all the way from Hiroshima to Yamagata in one day. That's 8 hours at the very least, probably more.

Oh okay thanks for that, the drum show is on that day so I'll look at changing things around, can you recommend anything not to be missed around Tokyo?
