06.09.2015 Flight

here are my questions:

1. is it a good plan, what things do i have consider or can i make better? i have seen many places in japan already.^^

2. i want to visit some obon festivities in tokyo: Toro Nagashi, Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple Noryo Bon Odori Taikai, Marunouchi Ondo Dai Bon Odori Taika or Oedo Matsuri Bon Odori Taikai. when is each festival held?

3. where can i take a train to a village or small city, get out of it and directly into the japanese woods for beetle hunting? :)

4. is it possible to do kamikochi in a day trip from tokyo? or how do i have to plan?

5. where to look at daimonji gozan best at kyoto and how near can i get to these enlighted kanji symbols?

thanks for helping

1. My impression is you are just putting up names where you want to go without checking where are they on map. Many places are all over the place and not efficient for travel.

2. Google Japan Festival, there should be a list, or Japan Summer festival. There should be some on this sites too.

3. No idea.

4. Probably no, you will need to get to Matsumoto to catch a bus to Kamikochi, consider Matsumoto as base for Kamikochi.

Have a look at map to re-arrange your itinerary.

Re: August 2015 Itinerary Advice 2014/9/3 18:49
1. Your itinerary is all over the place.

Like why aren't you combining Mt. Fuji with Fuji Q? Why not doing Osaka for 3 consecutive days, then Kyoto 3 days, then Himeji (or vice versa).

Why are you going from Tokyo to Izu, then down to Kyoto, back to Tokyo since you wanna see Kamakura, travel 'back' to Shirakawa-Go?

All this pretty pointless travel is gonna eat up your time in Japan and will cost unnecessary money. Replan, like trying going from South to North or whatever suits the festivals you want to attend.

2. IDK, google beetle hunting japan, try to find a village famous for it and go there.

Bases are as following:

Day 1-13: Tokyo/Shinjuku
Day 14-16: Ishigaki
Day 17-22: Osaka

So no jumping around. ;)

Re: August 2015 Itinerary Advice 2014/9/4 03:33
Here is a link to the Kyoto Travel website. It talks about the best viewing places for several of the symbols:

http://www.kyoto.travel/2009/11/gozan-no-okuribi-mountain-bon.html

For festival links, I would try the Seasonal Traditions & Japanese Culture website, and I would also try to include the Samba festival in Asakusa, Tokyo, if I were going in late August. Here is a link:

http://www.goldenjipangu.com/140831asakusa.html

Here is a link for the a more traditional Bon Dance festival in Tokyo from the same website:

http://www.goldenjipangu.com/140824koenji.html

And, since you were interested in Fire Festivals, you might want to go to the Festival Closing the climbing season of mount Fuji (same website):

http://www.goldenjipangu.com/140826ysd.html

I suggest that you poke around this website, and look for other festivals that might interest you.

I hope this helps.

Re: August 2015 Itinerary Advice 2014/9/4 22:10
is Gozan no Okuribi everyear august 16th?

I believe that this festival is fixed on the 16th. Nailing down the dates for festivals can be difficult, some set their dates as a specific date on the Gregorian Calendar (what we use), and other festival will use the Lunar Calendar, which uses the Chinese new year as the first day of the year (I think). Others will use "The second weekend in August", or some rule like that. The weirdest one I have come across so far is the Kanda Festival in Tokyo, which only happens on Odd years, and occurs on the closest Saturday and Sunday to the May 15th May 15th last year was on a Wednesday, which makes the Saturday equidistant. It was held on the 11th and 12th.

Is everything clear?

Some places that have Traditional festivals have switched from the Lunar Calendar to the Gregorian. So... some cities (Hirastuka near Tokyo) will celebrate Tanabata (7th day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar) in July, and other cities (Kyoto, Sendai) will celebrate it in August.

Is it clear as mud yet?

That said, you will have to check and re-check. I have found that the Seasonal Traditions Website will copy the dates from the previous year, and the correct when they find out that the dates have changed. One way that I use to figure out the date is to look for a history of when the festival was held over the last few years, and make a prediction from that.

You seem to be trying to get traditional summer events in Japan that people enjoy. One such event is a trip to the beach. There is a hot springs resort town called Atami that is near Tokyo that may interest you. It used to have the three largest geysers in the world, but ground shifting many years ago has altered the water supply to the geyser. Atami is south of Mount Fuji, has a Shinkansen station, and is on the coast between Tokyo and Nagoya. There are lots of resorts and onsens that you can stay at, and many have open air baths. The one I stayed at had the open air bath on the roof of the resort. There is a beach to go to, the Modern Museum of art, a cultural center that has Geisha Dances every Sunday, and fireworks in the harbor. When I went this year in July, the resort had roped off an area in the harbor for it's guests to watch the fireworks. Here is this year link to the dates of the fireworks:

http://www.goldenjipangu.com/140412atami.html

And here is a older link, that has information about what to do in Atami:

http://www.atamispa.com/atami_ex/english/sightseeing/index.htm

This link has the fireworks schedule from a few years ago, and gives you an idea of how the dates can change. The castle may still contain dolls, but the exhibit I saw had to do with Optical Illusions.

As for the best Onsen Experience, I am giving you a link to Uji's top nine list. In terms of information on this website, Uji is very good, and in Uji I trust:

http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+94500

My personal favorite hot spring to go is the hotel Urashima at Kii-Katsuura. This is a seaside town near Natchi Taisha that has a Fishing fleet. The hotel has two open air hot springs baths, that are located in seacaves. You sit in the bath, looking out over the ocean, and can listen to the waves crash on the rocks below the cave. The buffet meal at the hotel also has a Sushi carving demonstration, which usually starts with a 3-4 foot long fresh Tuna. This place is about a 4 hour train ride south of Osaka. The hotel is in the background of the photo of the fishing fleet on this link:

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4956.html

Kii-Katsurra is also close to Shirahama which is one of the three large hot springs beach resort towns, along with Atami, and Beppu.

To EBay
Yes, Uji we trust.
Yes, Shirahama is the best. Although, I like it for the super long escalator to the onsen on the 30 something floor overlooking the sea/town.

To Freak
It seems you are still focusing on making Tokyo your base city for the first few nights. Although, it is possible it is time consuming to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shirakawago and back to Tokyo for the night.
I recommend making your base Nagoyas. It is near Fuji and is nearer to Kyoto/Shirakawago/Matsumoto than Tokyo.

Tokyo could still be used as the base for Kamakura and before heading to the islands.

Re: August 2015 Itinerary Advice 2014/10/30 20:44
I still don't think you've looked at a map at all. Let me make this clearer:

Day 2: Shinjuku to Kamakura, one hour, so two hours round trip at 2000 yen. That's doable for a day trip.

Day 3: Shinjuku to Kyoto: 2 1/2 hours one way, so 5 hours on a train in a day, and the total cost is about 28000 yen. This is a total waste of time; if you want to see a festival on this day in Kyoto, spend your Kyoto/Osaka time, or at least spend the night in Kyoto.

Day 4: Where in Izu do you want to go? Say you go to Atami; if you take the shinkansen from Tokyo it's about 40 minutes one way at 4000 yen. If you want to save money, it'll take 2 hours one way on a regular train for about 2100 yen. If you want to go deeper into Izu, you'll add more time.

Day 5: You can do a day trip from Tokyo to Shirakawa-go, but I wouldn't bother. You will go, then turn around and come right back. From Tokyo to Takayama, it is 4 hours, then the bus ride to Shirakawa-go takes about an hour. Total one way is about 18000 yen. And part of the appeal of Shirakawa-go is staying overnight in a farmhouse. You'll also not have any time to visit Takayama at all, which is a waste.

I'm not even going to go over the rest of it. Why can't you just swing around in a big circle and maximize your time? For example, Tokyo to Kanagawa to Izu on the way to Nagoya, then combine Kyoto/Osaka/Nara/Ise/Himeji all together, then swing back up to Kanazawa (hit Shirakawa-go from here), then go to Gunma via Karuizawa to Kusatsu, Oze, and finally back to Tokyo.

my concerns for the Moment are

1) where can we find a nice onsen with outdoor baths in beautiful nature, where we can stay over night and go out in Kimono/yukata along our base Hotels in tokyo/Osaka?

2) whats a good place to go into the Woods and look for some beetles? maybe some recommended places in the more rural landside around tokyo or Osaka?

for me kusatsu onsen and Takaragawa Onsen comes in mind, but you might need to stay there overnight to fully appreciate the area and surroundings.

For Onsen Kyoto with Yukata strolling

Kii-Katsura, Kinosaki, Shirahama

You really have some bettle fetish. Just head to the woods. Dense woods with a river seems about right.

Re: August 2015 Itinerary Advice 2014/12/16 19:45
Sorry I haven't followed this thread from the beginning, but I'm wondering why you have a random Kyoto day wedged in your time in Tokyo? Wouldn't it be best to move that toward the end of your trip and just visit Kyoto from Osaka?

1. where can i eat deep fried momiji manju?

I always see it in Takao, but I'm not sure you can get it in August.

2. where can i eat hachinoko, maybe in tokyo? are there any other restaurants that servce fried insects?

You might be able to find it at tsukudani shops. I think I've seen it in Tsukushima in Tokyo, and around various markets.

3. when is the best time during our itinery to visit an onsen which has a few open baths in nature scenery?

Your Izu Peninsula and/or Iya Valley night would be best

4. where is a good place which can be reached by train, to go into the woods of japan for beetle hunting?

Interesting question. I would think that most any hiking trail would have good beetle hunting. Looking at your itinerary, baybe around Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, or in Fujigoko or Kamikochi?

thanks for your answer. the random kyoto day is because of the giant fire lid kanji. we are staying the night in a capsule hotel. we have a railpass so no worries about transportation costs. ;)

any more answers apreciated.^^
