Cycling Spots in Kyoto

I will be visiting Kyoto for about the 6th time later this month - I would like to know a good spot / route for cycling. I've cycled Arashiyama previously and would like another alternative, possibly one that starts from downtown Kyoto.
Since I've seen most major temples I'm not really interested in just a route between various temples, just a nice scenic ride to enjoy the surroundings and see nice scenery (I appreciate that Kyoto is a modern and built up city).
Any route that goes along the riverside or goes through areas of old / traditional housing are interesting. Last time I just followed the river northwards from Shijo, didn't really know where I was going but was enjoyable enough.
Wonder if there are any better places / routes to go?
Would be hiring a bike so that is also a consideration to make in terms of starting position.
