Tochigi City & Sawara Worth Going? 2014/9/21 01:56
Hi, would someone be so kind to advise me if Tochigi City or Sawara is worth going from Tokyo? I am going to Kawagoe in the earlier part of the day, & would like to visit another nearby historic town (with food). Both Tochigi and Sawara look deserted from goggle searched pictures..

Thanks for your help in advance!

They are minor destinations that I would only suggest to travelers that have been to the more famous places already (Kamakura, Nikko, Hakone, etc.) or have a special interst in Edo history.

Also, note that access to Sawara is quite time-consuming from Tokyo. You will spend most of your half-day to get there and back (about 4 hours round trip). Tochigi is slightly closer.

I have been to Kawagoe and Tochigi.
If you go to Kawagoe, you might say without going Tochigi.
However, I know that there is a festival at the beginning of November this before.
I think if at such time, and enjoy in another sense and Kawagoe.
If you stay in nikko, and to the stopover tobu nikko line on the way back might be nice.

Sawara is a nice town - but I'd call it a minor day trip. A post of my travels to Sawara are here:

As noted below - it takes quite a bit of time to get to Sawara.... 3 hours by train from Kawagoe from memory....
