Itinerary & Transport 2014/9/21 15:05
Hi. Does anyone have any ideas on the way to go about the following itinerary? We are not sure in what order to do it in or what rail passes we need. We will be arriving in Tokyo on the 29th January.

Snow Monkeys - Shirakawago - Ogimachi Village - Mt Koya

Thank you

Sue

I recommend the following order:

Tokyo - (via Nagano) - Snow Monkeys - (via Nagano, Matsumoto and Takayama) - Shirakawago - (via Kanazawa and Osaka) - Mount Koya

Assuming that you will not return to Tokyo, no pass will pay off.

An alternate route from the snow monkeys to Shirakawago could be via Naoetsu and Kanazawa. Unfortunately, you will visit just a few weeks too early to take advantage of the extended Hokuriku Shinkansen.

Thank you so much for this. We will be returning to Tokyo, so do you reccommend a pass?

If you return to Tokyo within 7 days, a 7-day pass will probably cost about the same as the regular tickets it would be covering or provide small savings. It also depends on the route taken between the monkeys and Shirakawago (i.e. non-JR bus through the mountains vs. JR trains along the Sea of Japan).

Thank you for this. So can all of this be done by train with no bus?

You will need to take local buses for Snow Monkeys, Shirakawago, Ogimachi Village and Mt Koya
