Hello, I would like to know if it's possible to travel from Tokyo to Magome, hike to Tsumago, and take the train back to Tokyo all in one day? Also, is it safe for a single woman to walk the trail alone in October? Is the place desolate? Thank you.

Yes, it is possible if you start your day relatively early, use fast transportation and travel at a relatively fast pace. I once didi it and even included Matsumoto Castle in addition to the two towns and the hike (but I was traveling very fast).

Generally yes. But, of course, nothing is 100% safe.
Is the place desolate?
Especially on weekdays it can be rather desolate. I remember meeting only a single other walker when I went in June.
