JR East Pass - Green Car option 2014/10/9 14:00
HI all,

I've tried searching for an answer to this but the results didn't give much clarity. My question is: I intend to purchase the JR East pass and I understand that the JR East pass does not offer a Green Car option at point of sale. But is it possible for me to pay for an upgrade to a Green Car seat, let's say for the Ltd Exp Wide View ride from Nagano to Matsumoto for instance, just for the experience.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

I don't know for sure, but I don't see why it would be a problem if you're happy to pay the difference.

Just don't expect a super-luxury sitting arrangements compared to regular seats.

Thanks for your responses. I would certainly be open to paying the difference and would be mindful of my expectations. The Green Car option would be helpful for me as I may be traveling over busy weekends/peak periods with young children. Securing seats, esp seats that are adjacent to my kids, would be essential.

Thanks for the detailed response igp2!

I'll take it from the responses here that I am allowed to upgrade to a Green Car option using the JR East Pass. I note the "negligible" difference between Green and Ordinary seats. But good to know that I can upgrade when I need to.

Thanks everyone again!

The Green Car is located in the rear of the train on the Nagano to Matsumoto direction, so I wouldn't recommend paying the extra. On the return, then perhaps yes.

It is not possible to only pay the difference between an ordinary car seat and a green car seat: you have to pay the full price of a green car seat (but not the base fare).

Re: JR East Pass - Green Car option 2014/10/9 21:07
The JR East website says:

To ride on Green Cars, GranClass, individual compartments, Liners or sleeper cars, an additional purchase is required, such as a limited express or sleeper ticket. See the station staff for further details.

No to be extra sure, just ask the clerk who will exchange your pass, they generally speak English. But I am fairly sure thay will tell you you have to pay the full price of the green seat (that's how it works with the countrywide JR Pass).
