Best route to drive in whole of Japan

So we want to add a bit of driving into our trip. Maybe a day or two. Something scenic. We don't particularly care where in Japan it is, but we will be getting there from Kyoto area. Not nessesarily hiring the car from Kyoto- we are happy to take a train somewhere quieter, hire the car and start from there. Any suggestions?
