Is it possible to have a day trip from Tokyo using JR Pass to Shirakawago and Takaoka? I will be travelling in December this year. Thanks

Theoretically maybe. But I think it would be quite unpractical, especially since the fastest trains to Takoka are not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass. I recommend against it.
Once the shinkansen is extended to Kanazawa in March 2015, such a daytrip would become more feasible.
