Driving from Osaka to Koyasan

We are planning to rent a car from Osaka to explore the Kii Peninsula, first stop Koyasan.
Has anyone recently travelled this route, can you drive into the village or is it better to leave the car at the bottom station of the cable car and take the cable car up?

I've driven up. There's plenty of parking up near the main temples and if you are staying at a temple stay you can leave your car there. Not sure if there's any parking at the lower station. No one drives there anyway.
