Visit to Akan National Park in Winter

Hi there,
I am planning to visit Eastern Hokkaido in Feb 2015.
On reading about Akan National Park from this website, it seems to me that transportation in this area is quite an issue in winter, and also there seems to be nothing much spectacular or no interesting activities apart from the lakes. Therefore I am thinking of giving it a miss, but move on to Abashiri straight from Kushiro.
However, if there is anything nice that I should not miss, would you kindly advise. Thank you.
