Getting married with a work visa 2014/11/28 19:22
So, I plan on moving to Japan and going to college there(student visa), and once I get a degree I'll get a job and switch to a work visa. I was wondering, if while on a work visa I got married, would I have to switch over to a spouse visa? Or would it at least be preferable to?

I obviously don't plan on marriage within the first few years I'm there, but things might happen and when I get older I will want to get married. But I have heard the spouse visa procedure is very complicated, and I wouldn't want to burden someone I love with that whole process. So could I stay with the work visa, or would I have to switch. Thank you very much!

You don't have to switch, but the spouse visa gives you much more flexibility in working options. So, it's probably better. As long as your spouse's family are on-board with you, then you shouldn't have a big problem.

Dainichi has already answered your other questions, but basically the change procedure is very simple. You just need to get a few forms from your city hall or ward office and a few other things. You could also hire a lawyer to do it for you if you don't want to do it yourself.
