IDP and the car rent in Japan? 2014/11/29 03:10
Hi i'm from Thailand. I plan to go to Japan during this new year and will rent a car there. I've just obtained an international driving license last week (in November). Am i eligible to rent a car in Japan? Do i need to obtain this international license at least 3 months before i go to Japan?

Thank you.

An IDP is mainly a translation of your home country driver's licence. You have to have both with you, but usually only the IDP is checked. There is no time limit on when you get it as long as it's valid while you're in Japan.

When you rent a car, you just show them the IDP. If you rent a car online, there is usually a place to enter the IDP number. When I've rented a car online, such as with Tocoo or direct from the vendor (Mazda, Nissan), I've never even shown my IDP when I picked up the car.
