I would like to visit Kyoto Imperial palace on 14th May 2015. How do I do advance booking with the place to ensure that I'm able to visit it on that day. Understood from friends that we need to book.

You can also do it in person at an office in the grounds surrounding the palace.

Understood from friends that we need to book.
It is correct that you need to book. However, if you are unable to book online, try to visit the imperial household agency Kyoto office in the morning , bring your passport ( they open at 08:45), very likely you will still get tickets.
