Train to Hokkaido for winter festival

I was planning go to Hokkaido by train (with rail pass), but I saw that you just can reserve seats at the moment you pick up your rail pass ticket.
So I was wondering there might be no places left on winter festival period. Or not?

Hi Luisa, are you travelling to Hokkaidō from Tōkyō? Trains might be a little packed to/from Sapporo during that time, as discussed in the following older threads.

I had the same concern when I was planning to visit the 2014 Yuki Matsuri, and based on the feedback I got, I decided to take a domestic flight instead.

Yes, I was thinking to get a flight to go or back, but I was not sure about what would be the fullest one.
