Portable Wifi?

Hi guys!
I will be in Japan in March. I was hoping to have a portable Wifi so I could skype call my parents and also be able to use my phone for Maps. I have an unlocked Iphone that runs on T-Mobile. I know I probably cant call normally but Id still like to use the Wifi for calling if this is possible?
Do any of you have experience with portable Wifi? Ive looked at several but I am unsure of what to get or what to do...
Are there any that dont require a monthly payment? If not... I guess thats fine! Ill take what I can get!

I used ToCoo when I was there - never had any connection issues, was fast, and I found it to be cheaper than any other rental (does not charge for rent between 9 and 30 days, so it was perfect for a month rental). Costs 3696 yen for 9-30 days. http://wifi.tocoo.jp/en/fee-n-product.php
