Question about shinkansen 2015/2/10 02:05
Traveling to Tokyo this March 26 to 31. I am thinking of taking the Kodama shinkansen to Odawara then onto Hakone for a day trip. My question is...

Can I buy 2 way tickets at Tokyo station?
For the return journey from Odawara, what if I miss my train? Can I hop on the next Kodama that arrives?

Yes, but there is no discount in price.

Yes, if you make seat reservations and miss the train, then you can ride non-reserved seats on any other train.

The Kodama tends to have a lot of unreserved seats, and many people will not bother to make seat reservations as it is a short distance.

Hi! Thanks for the reply! Follow up question...

If I don't buy reserved tickets on any shinkansen, I can actually ride any shinkansen for the day of the base ticket?

Yes, non-reserved tickets are not bound to any particular train.
