I understand this bus route is not covered by the JR pass, is it possible to buy a one way ticket but stopping overnight in Shirakawago and continuing the next day, it seems cheaper that buying two individual tickets?

If you get off at Shirakawago, then you need to buy two separate tickets.

You should reserve it a few days before. There might be some seats available the day before if you're traveling on a quiet weekday. You have to reserve it in person by going to the Nohi bus office which is right next to Bus Stop #2 of the Kanazawa Station East Exit bus terminals.

Thanks we'll be arriving in Kanazawa by train on Saturday 16th may, then taking the bus to Shirakawa on Monday 18th around lunchtime, staying one night then on to Takayama next morning. So we should reserve the seat upon arrival in Kanazawa? Also should we reserve the Shirakawa -Takayama leg at the same time?
