400,000 yen per month, enough? 2015/3/18 22:55
Company paying me 400000 non taxable, rent is paid for, as are utilities. Metro card is provided and reimbursed by company. 1 month living with visiting gf, rest five months on my own. Is it enough to survive Tokyo comfortably?

400,000 yen is not much for 2 people. But seeing as your gf is only visiting for a month, you might have to struggle a little bit while she is there.

400,000 yen is more then what the average fresh graduate is paid so it is a good salary for one person, this also depends on your lifestyle. If you spend on expensive stuff then you might face financial problems.

Well since your saying that rent and utilities are paid for by the company, you are in a good position financially.

Yep, of course! I wish I got paid that much! If theyfre covering rent, utilities, and travel, youfll practically have about 350,000 yen after taxes, for anything else. Thatfs like $3,500 only for food and entertainment.

Is that 400,000 yen amount after taxes? You must pay into health insurance, employment tax, etc. like any other country, even if you are tax-exempt from your country. Tax-exempt just means you donft have to pay inhabitant or income taxes, but not free from normal deductions that all citizens must pay from their paycheck. These deductions are about 50,000 yen from a monthfs paycheck.

Will you be having champagne and caviar champagne for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day?

400,000 Yen is about $3300 US. Can you live on $3300 US per month when your rent, utilities and transportation are all paid for by your company? Unless you have a serious coke habit, I would have to say that yes you could survive comfortably on $3300 US per month in any city including Tokyo.

I seriously liked daai maou's coke habit comment. Haha. 400,000 non-taxable is incredible.
