I'm from malaysia and will be staying near Shinjuku station during my tour in Tokyo in this coming April. I'm dying to go to 1 of the famous cat island. My 1st choice is Tashirojima. But just found out that I need to take another alternative line since line to Ishinomaki and Nitoda port will only be reopened in 30 May. My 2nd choice is Aoshima, Ehime pref. But I'm not sure whether it was the nearest and easiest island from Tokyo. If yes, can u help by choosing the JR line and ferry to the island please. Or else pls let me know the most easiest way to the most nearest cat island.
Tq.

Yes, Enoshima has plenty of cats (especially around the gardens near the tower) but also swarms of hawks as well. And views of Mt Fuji on a clear day. It is a great place to go. We stayed overnight a few years back and are going back for a few nights in April.

When I went to Enoshima last of October, I saw a cat about five. Compared to the old days, it seems to have decreased. In particular, the cat was in between The Iwaya Caves from Love Bell. Since the cat is accustomed to tourists, do not run away too much. Although Japanese broadcast is flowing, the Enoshima flying many kite. Since the kite to steal food, please be careful when eating outdoors of Enoshima.

Yeah, I would hardly call Enoshima a "cat island" - the last time I went there was around the same density of cats as a typical Tokyo residential neighborhood. (I agree that there used to be more.)

I went here yesterday (August 2015) and saw around 20 cats, definitely more than some other replies have suggested. The best place is the park, which is away from the main sightseeing area. As you disembark from the bridge and enter the island follow the path that veers to the left, adjacent to the waterfront. Shortly you will see a park on the right, there's a high concentration of cats here and in the surrounding backstreets. There are numerous cats scattered all over the island but the park and residential area is the best place to go to see a lot at once.
