Fuji Hiking Stick - Shipping it back

Hi i understand this is a little off topic.
I am asking this because i want to get the fuji hiking stick back home as a good keepsake but i am flying low cost airline hence i think rejection of checking in the stick is bound to happen. It's just such a pity to throw the stick away due to airline rejection or when you check it in , its damaged during the process.
Had anyone try posting the stick back home? Did they ask for any special bubble wrapping or a long box to contain the stick? I hope i can look for some ans here. ;)

Shipped a "bokan" once (wooden sword). I just wrapped it totally in paper and taped it up well with address labels and took it to the post office. I don't remember the costs but it arrived.
