Staying overnight in Aso carpark 2015/4/12 10:46
Does any body know if the locals would care if I stayed at the Aso ropeway carpark or the Aso volcano museum carpark for a couple of nights in my camper?

I've found usually people are cool with me staying overnight in public carparks like these, but occasionally can be a bit officious...

These parking are No Not for public.
Only for the day traveler and include volcano warning problem, too.

Basically felt "cool" are normal reactions as local
bc real bad guys also using regular normal looks rent a car usual.
(cannot explane about their night jobs details)
Maybe u know "hide in plain sight" or similar phrases very simple reason based.

However, stay roadside station(rest area) "Michi no eki" are no problem.
Stay near station with toilet(open 24h/free) also no need parking fee.

If you climb up to the crater from the south side (Takamori & Asoshirakawa), there is an old unused parking lot on the right side of the road (as you're going up) across from some fields and an old grass filled crater. There is a restroom still here that still worked the last time I stopped. The stone steps lead up to a gazebo with some views over the caldera. This place has never been open in the last 30 years that I've cruised by. I stop and have an obento lunch at the gazebo occasionally, only running into locals who are surprised I know the place.

Besides this parking area, there are several pull-outs onto flat gravel areas along the same road that could probably be used. Just follow the road up on from the above map view and you can see them.
