Ideas for a solo trip 2015/4/16 23:39
Kinda just throwing this question out there, but I have an entire week off during Golden Week and haven't made any plans.

I'm currently in Tokyo; any sort of trip, I'd probably be going by myself. I was thinking maybe I could go to Fuji 5th station since I haven't been, and wander around, but it seems like it might be crowded and hard to get accommodations. Osaka maybe? I know it's broad, but I would love to hear any ideas. I love taking photos, more than your average tourist, so any good opportunities to do so (festivals, whatnot) would be welcome too!

Otherwise I'll probably just stay home, watch TV, and study.

I've been to Kyoto and it's surrounding destinations (Nara, Uji, Arashiyama, Karuizawa, etc), once to somewhere near Fujisan though I don't think it was as close as 5th station, and once to Osaka but I don't remember much of it anymore. Other than that, I've mostly stayed in and around Tokyo.

I'd like to visit Okinawa and Hokkaido eventually but I don't think this is the time to do it.

How about checking out the Chubu area? There's Kyoto in the last part of this itinerary but the rest of it seems doable for Golden Week?

For Festivals, I would go to Hakata (Fukuoka), and Hiroshima. Hakata has the Hakata Dontaku Port Festival, and Hiroshima has a Flower Festival, which has a Kosakoi Parade. I would also think about going to Kawachi Fuji Gardens, for the Wisteria Tunnels, which should be in full bloom at that time.

Both Festival are mentions in Seasonable Trditions and Japanese Culture Website, but there are a lot more listed, and you might waqnt something more local to where you are. Here is a link:

I hope this give you some ideas.

How about day trips from Tokyo?

Have you visited areas such as Nikko or Takaosan yet?

Thank you, those ideas are amazing. I think the day trips sound like a good idea and I've never been to either of those locations, so I'll probably check them out. Thanks for the links to the festivals too, will probably find local events so I won't have to deal with finding hotels, etc.

Do you like trains?
Train Museum at Saitama http://www.railway-museum.jp/

You could do a day trip now to Kanazawa and back on the same day.

Maybe a relaxing Ryokan Onsen trip to Kinosakionsen http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3525.html

Hope this helps!
Have fun!!!

A lot of the more popular and well known places are going to be jammed with people simply because it is Golden Week.

That said, if you have never seen it before, going to see the Ashikaga Flower Park to see the wisteria in full bloom would be a wonderful trip:

Otherwise, why not go to some places that are not so well known or full of people? There are some good places up north, in the Tohoku area. Or you could try the Hokuriku area.
If you really want a great place to explore - try Shikoku - many people simply ignore or bypass it, even though it too has a number of good places.
Climbing up to see Konpirasan in Kotohira, Kagawa is an adventure unto itself, and the sights are very beautiful:

Takamatsu, Kochi, and Matsuyama all have some good sights.
In Ehime, the Nanraku garden in Uwajima is very nice, and the Taga Shrine for its giant phallus is something you rarely see in Japan:

Or go see Hiroshima - it has many good places, in the city as well as prefecture. In Onomichi the Kosanji Temple is stunning for its color and even over the top displays:

Iwakuni also has its iconic bridge and mountaintop castle:

and there are many, many more places to explore with a bit of research.
