Best Rail Pass For 7 Days 2015/5/22 11:13
We are 2 adults with 3 children ages 16, 13 and 2 will be going to Tokyo via Round Trip Haneda for 7 days and stay in 2 hotels, the Millennium Mitsui Garden at Ginza and Hotel Keisui in Taira. Some places that we plan to see are Nagano, Tokyo Disney, Fiji Shibazakura Festival and Teteyama Kurobe Alphine Route.

We like to know what is the best Rail Pass for us? Thank you very much!

If you're only staying in Tokyo, just get a prepaid card (Suica or Pasmo). These work for all public transport, it's a preload then tap-on-tap-off system. Most travel passes only pay off if you travel long distances.

Thank you very much for your reply. By the way, would you know the cost of train fare? Also if there is child fare?

Your two kids are under adult fare. Your toddler is considered free

Fuji Shibazakura Festival will end on 31st May, so I think you must decide the precise itinerary.

Without knowing the exact itinerary, I can not suggest any rail pass or normal tickets. For example, You may start the Alpine route from Shinano-Omachi (one of your hotel may be in Omachi onsen) and end at Toyama, and then take Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tokyo. Nagano is on your way to Tokyo, but when you get at Nagano, it will be late evening. So you might better consider stay at Nagano, but if your accommodation is fixed, you might have no option to stay at Nagano. In that case you can do a day trip from Tokyo to Nagano, which will cost about 8000 yen/one way. If this is the case, Japan Rail Pass will pay off.

So could you let us know your day-by-day itinerary?

Sorry, but I am not sure where you will stay each night.

May 23 and 24 You will stay Tokyo.
May 25 Fuji Shibazakura Festival Will you go back to Tokyo and stay there?
May 26 Tokyo to Nagano Will you go back to Tokyo and stay there or stay Nagano at night? Do you mean Nagano as Nagano city or Shinano Omachi?
May 27 Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route Where will you start? Tokyo? Nagano city? Shinano Omachi?
May 28 Nagano to Tokyo Where in Nagano?
May 29 Tokyo Disney Will you leave Japan from Haneda late at night?

I have just noticed that you are already in Tokyo :). So if you have not bought Japan Rail Pass, you can not buy it. Fortunately the nation wide Japan Rail Pass 7 days should not be appropriate for your itinerary. I think JR East Pass would be suitable.

May 23 and 24 Tokyo
May 25 Fuji Shibazakura Festival JR East Pass Day 1 Fujikyu line from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko and bus from Kawaguchiko to festival are not covered.
May 26 Tokyo to Nagano JR East Pass Day 2. If you mean Nagano as Shinano Omachi, you can go via Chuo line or Hokuriku Shinkansen. Both routes are fully covered.
May 27 Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route If you do a round trip to Murodo or somewhere on the Alpine route to Shinano Omachi, you don't need JR East Pass. Of course you must buy tickets for the Alpine route.
May 28 Nagano to Tokyo JR East Pass Day 3. On May 28 and May 26, you can stop over somewhere between Tokyo and Shinano Omachi. Matsumoto (famous for Matsumoto castle), Nagano (Zenkoji temple) and Karuizawa can be good candidates.
May 29 Tokyo Disney

You have spare 2 days for JR East Pass. You can use them on 24th and 29th.
