Rishiri-Rebun Islands Suggestions? 2015/6/9 05:34
Hello,

I want to ask if there is bike rental on both islands? And if there is, how much would it cost?

My mom and I have one day and a half to visit both islands. At least, that's what we planned at first because my mom wouldn't be hiking much, so I guess that would save us some time.

Can you recommend the itinerary for seeing scenic views on both islands?

BTW, Our plan is to be arriving at Rebun Island at 08:15, then leave for Rishiri Island and arrive at 14:00. In the next morning (June 25), we would bike for an hour or two and leave for Wakkanai at 8:30 or 14:25. Is that enough?

Thank you in advance!

There are scooter rentals near the port in Kafuka on Rebun-to, but I don't remember seeing any bicycle shop. Some of the minshuku in Kafuka have bicycles but I don't know if they rent to non-guests and I don't know the price. If you only have 4 hours, you're not going to get very far. The Soya bus company which runs the scheduled buses also have some set tours from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours, all of which get you to the northern tip of the island at Sukoton. They leave from the port. Phone: 0162-23-5510 & 01638-6-1020. Rebun is known for its hiking trails, but you might have some fun biking over to the Momoiwa/Motochi area to the SW of Kafuka.

Rishiri has bicycle rentals at the port area and several minshuku also have bicycles parked out front (Pension Hera is one). I don't know the rental prices. Rishiri is known for its 56 km ride around the island which takes 5-7 hours. There is also a 29 km bicycle trail from near the port at Oshidomari to Katsugata.

Found some dated information but it might give you an idea. The scooter rental shop next to the Toyota Rentacar in Kafuka (Rebun) also has some bicycles. The going rate used to be Y400 per hour or Y2000 per day. The prices were about the same on Rishiri-to. Scooters were Y1000/hour and Y4000/day.

Thank you very much.
Do you have details on the Soya bus tours?
I tried to search but it's only in Japanese.

Their information online is only in Japanese at:
http://www.soyabus.co.jp/teikan.htm

Flyer:
http://www.soyabus.co.jp/teikan2015.htm

On the flyer in the box below the wind turbine that has 6 categories in 3 colors:
To Rebun-to this year is the A-1 morning course and the A-2 afternoon course @ Y3,300 per person. From 21 May to 31 August, A-1 leaves at 8:40 AM and gets back at 12:35. The A-2 course, between 21 May and 30 September, leaves at 2:05 PM and gets back at 5:05 PM.

Below that box, they advertise bus tours that leave from Wakkanai that use the ferry; they have the red bars with the time in them. They leave from Wakkanai, ferry to either Kafuka or Oodomari first, tour one island, take the ferry to the other island, tour that island, and then return by ferry to Wakkanai. The length of the bus tours is mainly what's different between them. Since the tours depart from Wakkanai at 6:20 to 7:15 AM, you would have to arrange one of these the day before in Wakkanai.

In the upper box, the green A & B tours are for Wakkanai, and the purple A & B tours are for Rishiri-to.

You can make reservations or find out more information at the Soya Bus Window in the Wakkainai Ferry Terminal.

Rebun office 0163-86-1020
Rishiri office 0163-84-2550

Beginning now, Hokkaido is the best place to be in Japan over the next few months. You won't have to worry about "Cool Biz" up there.
