Unlisted spots around Sendai

I'll be travelling to Sendai for work and have a few days that I can take off afterwards.
I will go to Matsushima, but are there any recommended spots, preferably unlisted here on JapanGuide ?

I'm not a big festival fan though. Also I know some places look more beautiful in this or that season, but that doesn't really matter here.

I checked the Sendai and Miyagi tourism sites, but the places listed on these sites are basically the big sights that are also listed here.

I was having a look at the loople site yesterday and saw that the pdf brochure they have on the page lists a couple of different attractions other than the more popular ones you see listed everywhere: http://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/english/bus/loople/index.html

You can tour the Sendai Shinkansen maintenance depot. They have a visitor center and several guided tours a day. It's, free and easy to get to from Sendai station. You get to see some historic trains, too.
