Train or Rent a Car for Hokkaido

Hi,
We would be visiting Hokkaido this Oct for 3 days, would like to understand if renting a car and drive would be better option to explore Hokkaido or taking a train would be faster?
Really appreciate your feedback

Or you flying in, taking a shinkansen, a ferry, or a night train to Hokkaido. Where are your points of arrival and departure. Like what SD mentioned: Where do you wanna go?

we would flying in to Chitose airport from Singapore. In Hokkaido, we want Sapporo as base and then do day trips to Hakodate, Otaru, lake Toya & Furano.
