JR Thunderbird seating availability? 2015/7/31 21:40
Hi,
Is there anywhere to see the seating availability on the Kyoto - Kanazawa train JR Thunderbird?

Are there any days or times of the day when reserved seating might be hard to get?

This tool lets you look up the state of reserved seat availability for the Thunderbird and most other JR trains:
http://www.jr.cyberstation.ne.jp/vacancy/Vacancy.html

Select a date and departure time.
Then, select the last option in the next drop down menue (在来線列車).
Then enter 京都 (for Kyoto) and 金沢 (for Kanazawa) into the two text fields.
The click the blue button.

You will the see the state of seat availability of train departures from the time selected. A ○ means there are lots of vacancies. A △ means there are only a few seats left. A × means that there are no seats left. The seat symbol at the top refers to "ordinary seats" versus the green clover symbol which refers to Green Car seats.

Note that Thunderbird trains also carry non-reserved seats, so you can ride them even if all reserved seats are sold out.

Generally speaking, trains bound for Kanazawa tend to be busiest in the mornings, while trains bound for Kyoto tend to busiest in the evening.

Oh thank you for the information.

By mornings do you refer to the morning rush hour? I probably wont leave before 9 Am so maybe no problem.

On weekdays, the 9:09 and 9:42 departures seem to be particularly popular. After 10:30 it seems to get less busy. On weekends, the trains seem to be generally more busy than on weekdays.
