It looks like travel between tourist destinations in Fukui is not that simple. What is the best way to get from Eiheiji Temple to Maruoka Castle? Are taxis easy to find?

The best way to explore Fukui is by rental car. Otherwise you'll need lots of time to take public transportation, or lots of cash for taxis.

What is the best way to get from Eiheiji Temple to Maruoka Castle?

You could go by bus via Honmaruoka Bus Stop, however the connections may not be the most convenient. Rental car or taxi is the other option.

Are taxis easy to find?

At Eiheiji, yes. Prob not so much at Maruoka Castle.

The pages here in japan-guide.com explain traveling and also have a link to one bus schedule. I haven't been yet but hope to go this spring and will use public transport....it doesn't seem that difficult imo....you just have to time it right....

Getting to Eihiji is reasonably easy by bus. Getting to the castle is a little more challenging but possible.

Your best bet (apart from hiring a car - Fukui is a good place to hire a car) would be to contact the Fukui Tourist Bureau who has all of the train and bus times you need to get around the prefecture.

There are more buses to Maruoka Castle (from Fukui Station) than to Eiheiji Temple, so it's not that bad.

Near Maruoka Station there is also a rentacycle (長谷川自転車店):

You could alternatively walk from the station, so there are options.
