JR Pass Kansai Hiroshima 2015/10/17 22:59
Is this rail pass a ticket by itself or do I get an individual ticket for each trip I want to ride, when I show my JR pass Kansai Hiroshima to the clerk at a ticket counter?

Yes, the pass is your ticket. No additional ticket is required. You cannot use the automatic ticket gates, though. Instead you have to use the manned ones. Just like the Japan Rail Pass.

Thank you very much. I have always used single tickets for rail travel in Japan. So I am familiar with the different gates at the stations and now we will find our way with the JR Pass Kansai Hiroshima.

It's far more convenient with a pass then lining up for single tickets. Just hold up the pass and walk on through the manned gate. They might want to examine and check it, but most of the time you're just waived through. At busier stations you might see someone else talking to the attendant, in which case again, just hold it up and walk on through.
There is a tremendous number of good places to see in the area. Hiroshima is the most popular area just south of Kansai, and the gem is clearly Miyajima - you won't be the only tourist going there by any means. The big draw is naturally the Itsukushima Shrine.

But if you only see that place, you're sorely shortchanging yourself. The Daishoin Temple is equally if not more beautiful.

And if you have the chance, climb Mt Misen for the great view.

Plus just a stone's throw past Miyajima is Iwakuni, with its iconic bridge and mountaintop castle.

You can also use the pass to see 2 of Japan's most beautiful traditional gardens, one in Takamatsu called Ritsurin

and one of Japan's Top 3 in Okayama City called Korakuen.

There are many others as well - Onomichi, Kurashiki, Bichu-Takahashi, and others.
Get ready - you're going to be busy.
