Hi
Do you know if Takachiho Gorge is open during new year period i.e. 1 to 3 Jan 2016?

Yes, both the gorge and the boat rentals should be open during that period. It seems the boats are only closed if the water level is too high. If the waiting times get very long, they also sometimes close registration early. The path around the gorge will be open regardless of date/time/weather.
