Arashiyama - What to see in late December

From one of the website which I was surfing for Kyoto holiday tips, I read that in December (Winter), the bamboo grove at Arashiyama would be illuminated.

May I know what is the best time to see the illuminated bamboo grove in late December (26/ 27 Dec)?
Beside the bamboo grove, what are the other area I could visit in the evening?

It is only a few days long and not during the days you mentioned. It does look pretty though, in my mind it is nothing but a publicity stunt to get more visitors in during the less crowded months of the year.
